As of yet so-called “speeding passes,” in which you can pay to legally speed, aren’t available anywhere in the United States. And it doesn’t look like that will be changing anytime in the near future. But it could! Perhaps. In Nevada, at least. Here’s why.

Currently Nevada, much like many other states, has a large budget deficit and is in need of raising funds fast. In fact, if the rest of the country was doing as poorly as Nevada currently is, well, we’d be calling our current recession a depression. All that to say, elections are coming up and politicians are looking for new angles to making the state a quick buck.

The most interesting yet comes from gubernatorial candidate Eugene “Gino” DiSimone, who is pushing for the above “speedingpasses” as a part of his “Free Limit Plan.” Here’s how it would work.

Pay $25 and you’ll receive a 24-hour driving pass allowing you to travel up to 90 mph within specified freeways and parts of the state (for example, probably not near large population centers). DiSimone believes this pass would be popular enough to make the state up to $1 billion a year. Unfortunately, DiSimone is a bit of a fringe candidate (not running with either major party) and likely won’t be elected.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean his idea is doomed to failure as well. So what say you? Would you pay for a pass to legally speed? And do you think it’s a good idea?
