How to Become a Mechanic

So you decided to become a mechanic? Congratulations. But beware, automotive training is definitely one of the toughest ones out there. Being a mechanic is not what it used to be, and getting the proper training to diagnose repair and maintain today’s vehicles on the road is critical for today’s Automotive Technician. The good side to this is that there is more demand, in other words, if you know what you are doing, you will have a job.

There are various ways of becoming a mechanic, but the best one is to go to school. There are a lot of programs available throughout the country. You should look for a trade school diploma, which would take you about two years. Inside they will teach you proper safety procedures and the eight systems of the automobile: Engine repair, Engine performance, Electrical systems, Steering and Suspension, Brakes, Air Conditioning, Automatic Transmissions, and Manual Transmissions. For each of these systems there is an ASE certification. ASE stands for the Automotive Service Excellence association and the more you have, the easier it’ll be to get a job, and having all eight of them will make you one of the few to be a Master ASE technician (there is only a handful in the states).

While you are in school you should try and find a job as an entry level technician. This is very important as everything you learn at school you’ll associate with your work. Think about it, you’ll be breathing mechanics all day and night for two years, is tough, but it has its rewards. When you do this you should be careful to see where you work. The workplace you want to be in will have competent technicians to learn from, proper tools and good car flow. You don’t want to end up in a place learning all the wrong things because when you move up, like a dealer or a specialty shop, you want to prove them and yourself that you learned the proper techniques.

Other forms of training are small short classes, provided but parts distributors, and there is a lot of online training. A/C Delco provides very good training videos online, also Motorcraft Service allows you to purchase their training. You should also know that if you work for a respectable dealer, they will most likely pay for your training.

Another form of training includes reading mechanic magazines, for example, Import Car, MotorAge, Transmission Digest, between others. The more training you get the better. The knowledge you posses will always be proportional to the amount of money you make.

It is the Technician responsibility to get as much training as he can. Engineers are challenged every day to change and improve vehicles, and technicians are challenged everyday to maintain and fixed them. Doing so requires the proper training and experience from both of them.

In conclusion, getting the proper training requires research, time, and hard work. You can always ask around to local shops and see what they are looking for in a technician curriculum, what kind of training do they prefer. And remember, the internet is a very powerful tool in your arsenal, use it.
